This is unacceptable!!! Sarel and his team conduct top-class science in the field directly relevant to the grant call - and that should be the only thing that matters. Sarel's comment: For context, Delft University of Technology has recently decided to boycott all collaborations with Israeli academia. I privately explained that Israeli academics have been at the forefront of resistance to the war in Gaza and the occupation of the West Bank for many years and in support of a two-state solution. And that we pay a dear price for upholding these principles. In addition, the Weizmann Institute of Science conducts frontier research for the benefit of humanity, leading to life-saving blockbuster drugs and algorithms we all use daily. Our own lab's design algorithms have been used to generate enzymes for sustainability applications and therapeutic proteins, including ones that entered preclinical and clinical trials. But Delft University allows for no nuance and rejected my plea. I hope that with the support of our European friends, we may remind university administrators that the goal of science is to look closely at the evidence for any decision we take, that collaboration is the lifeblood of frontier research, and that we should reject calls for division and marginalisation. Join us, instead, in calling and acting towards just peace and rebuilding in the Middle East.
